Wednesday, February 15or Tuesday, February 21:  How to Retire - 10:00 a.m-12:00p.m. – Human Resource Services 178

Thinking about retirement?  This informational workshop will address some key points to remember in your planning.  This workshop is for employees who participate in the Traditional and Portable S.U.R.S. plans ONLY. Topics include: how to use the SURS estimator.  How and when to inform your department of your retirement.  How far in advance should you start planning.  What resources are available to help you in the retirement process.  (Maximum of 20 per class) Presented by Deborah Haliczer, Dennis Davito, and Marlene Bryant, Human Resource Services


 

Tuesday, February 28:  Managing & Handling Cash - 1-3:00 p.m. - Holmes Student Center 406

This workshop is designed for staff with direct responsibility for handling and depositing cash and for those who manage cash operations. The session will cover procedures for handling currency, checks, and credit card transactions, issuing cash receipts, and depositing cash.  We will also discuss general guidelines for achieving internal control over cash transactions, including separation of duties and other checks and balances. Friday, March 2:  Effective Evaluation and Performance Review – 1-4:30 p.m. – Holmes Student Center 406

This workshop deals with principles and processes of employee evaluation, developing and communicating performance expectations, engaging in ongoing dialogue with employees on performance expectations and goals, and preparing for evaluation. Presented by Deborah Haliczer, HRS Employee Relations

Tuesday, March 6:  From Cards to Cultural Understanding – 10 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Holmes Student Center

In the university community we work with students and colleagues from many different cultures and backgrounds.  Through an enjoyable card game, intercultural facilitators provide an experience in communicating across cultural boundaries.  They also explore techniques and strategies to bridge such differences and work more effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds. Tuesday, March 20:  How Procurement Works at NIU – 3-4:30 p.m. – Human Resource Services 178

Illinois Purchasing Laws have changed recently. Understanding these changes and knowing how procurement rules may impact the time needed to secure goods and services can be critical to the successful completion of a project.  A description of the changes will be provided along with an overview of how procurement works at the university. This educational workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the Family Medical Leave, Family Illness Leave and Workers’ Compensation.  Objectives will include: eligibility, entitlement, types and duration of leave, medical certification, and maintenance and job protection. Thursday, April 5:How to take a class at NIU as an Employee - 1-2:30 p.m. – Founders Library room 297

This workshop is designed for the employee who wants to take classes at NIU.  It will cover how to be admitted as a student at large, undergraduate and as a graduate.  Registering for classes on-line will be demonstrated.  The tuition waiver process and what is covered by the waiver will be explained.  Presented by Jay Monteiro, Human Resource Services; Courtney Harms, Registration & Records; and Fred Pugh, Research & Graduate Studies

Tuesday, April 10:  Workers’ Compensation – 10:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Human Resource Services 178 

The participant will learn about the Workers’ Compensation process as it relates to the employee, employing department, CareSys and Central Management Services. Emily Murray, Workers’ Compensation Coordinator, will present information regarding what to do in the event an accident occurs, medical care, time off work and the importance of communication.  Scott Mooberry, Safety Officer, Environmental Health and Safety, will discuss an overview of accident/incident prevention, identifying potential hazards and services this office can offer. Tuesday, April 10:  Resolving Conflicts At Work – 1-4:30 p.m. – Holmes Student Center 306

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable, but fighting about it is not. While professional assistance is available on campus to help faculty and staff resolve differences, most conflicts are resolved by the individuals who are directly involved in the conflict. This workshop will present participants with skills and strategies that can help them resolve conflicts with colleagues, staff and supervisors. Workshop activities will help participants communicate, as well as negotiate with a colleague, while keeping the relationship intact.  Presented by Deborah Haliczer, HRS Employee Relations

 


 

Wednesday, April 18:  Americans with Disabilities – 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. - Human Resource Services 178

This educational workshop is an opportunity to learn more about the Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA, and how it affects employees and supervisors. Objectives will include informational material on the ADA, University policy, identifying essential duties, and reasonable accommodations.  Supervisors are encouraged to register for this workshop as it will provide a foundation on addressing ADA concerns and their responsibilities.  The program involves participants with interactive activities and discussion; therefore, we must limit the number of attendees in each session.  Presented by Emily Murray, Human Resource Services

 


 

Thursday, April 26:  Maintaining Constructive Relationships In and Out of the Classroom – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

           Holmes Student Center Illinois Rm
This workshop will address establishing and maintaining appropriate and constructive relationships in the classroom.
participants will discuss issues of communication, boundaries and relationships between faculty and students, both graduate
and undergraduate. This workshop moves beyond general topics of sexual harassment, and addresses how to create and maintain supportive and mentoring relationships with students, and junior colleagues and avoiding any perception that one is crossing the boundary into personal relationships.  Presented by Deborah Haliczer, HRS Employee Relations

Policies and procedures involved in hiring a student employee, including all paperwork used in the hiring process will be covered. This session is designed both for staff who are new to student employment paperwork and those that would like a review.
