Bereavement Leave

Immediate Family / Household Member

Upon request, an eligible employee shall be granted, without loss of pay, bereavement leave of up to three work days due to the death of a member of his or her immediate family or household. For these purposes, the immediate family is defined as:

  • Spouse (including Civil Union)
  • Domestic Partner
  • Child
  • Parent
  • Brother
  • Sister
  • Grandparent
  • Grandchild
  • Corresponding In-Laws
  • Immediate Family of Domestic Partner (defined above)

Relative (outside the immediate family or household)

Upon request, an eligible employee shall be granted, without loss of pay, bereavement leave of one workday due to the death of a relative outside his or her immediate family or household. For these purposes, a relative is defined as:

  • Aunts
  • Uncles
  • Nieces
  • Nephews
  • Cousins
  • Corresponding In-Laws

Additional Information

Leaves beyond these amounts may be approved under special circumstances by the department in consultation with Human Resource Services. However, such additional leave will be charged to accrued vacation, sick leave, and or personal leave.

Bereavement usage should be noted in the comments section of the Salaried Non-Exempt / Hourly Time Sheet and Benefit Usage Report or Salaried Employee Benefit Usage Form (include dates and relationship to the deceased).
