The tragic incidents of this morning in our nation’s capitol and in New York have far-reaching consequences for Americans in every corner of this country. It is imperative for all of us at NIU to remain calm and focus our energies and concerns toward those members of our campus community who might be affected by these events.
First and foremost, we are committed to maintaining as high a degree of normalcy on our campus as is possible under the circumstances. Classes are being held and all other normal university operations are proceeding as scheduled.
However, I strongly urge all faculty and supervisors to be sensitive to the special needs and concerns of our students and staff. Given the scope of this tragedy, we should expect that a number of members of our campus community may have friends or relatives involved in this morning’s incidents. I would urge faculty to allow time in class to discuss the issue and let students express their views. We are aware that some faculty have chosen to cancel classes. I would urge deans and supervisors to respect the needs of students, faculty and staff to pursue personal concerns following this tragedy.
NIU counselors have been dispatched to the residence halls, extra televisions have been set up in the halls and in the Holmes Student Center, and campus ministers are also spending time today in the residence halls.
