COPYRIGHT ISSUES

Thursday, April 13, 11-12:00 - HSC 306

What do departments and their staff need to know about copyright law? What restrictions are placed on departments regarding copyrighted materials, and what are the risks of not knowing and not observing copyright law? Bring your questions and participate in this workshop that can prevent your department from legal problems with copyrights. Presented by Norden Gilbert, NIU University Counsel.

Principles of Evaluation at NIU: This part of the workshop deals with principles and processes of employee evaluation, developing and communicating performance expectations, engaging in ongoing dialogue with employees on performance expectations and goals, and preparing for evaluation. Writing evaluations and communicating about performance : In this second part of the workshop, participants will present and discuss their written evaluation comments and narratives with other participants, and will practice verbal communication about performance. This workshop will cover the basics on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act as it relates to NIU faculty and staff. This program is important for anyone having access to computerized student records as well as folders containing student records relating to their academic history which are housed in departmental offices. There will be a question/answer session to address specific issues you might have. Case studies will be presented for you to immediately begin applying the concepts. Do meetings feel unproductive and frustrating? Do you find it difficult to get through the agenda and get the work done? This two session workshop will help you learn to plan, organize, and conduct more effective meetings. Part I will focus on organizing, logistics, agendas and running meetings. Part II will continue, and look at how to manage group dynamics so meetings are more productive. Presented by Sharon Dowen, Internal Audit and Deborah Haliczer, Human Resource Services.

MANAGING & HANDLING CASH

Friday, February 24, 9-11:00 a.m. - HSC Room 306

This workshop is designed for staff that have direct responsibility for handling and depositing cash and for the staff who manage cash operations. This workshop will cover controls over cash sales, including the use of cash registers and electronic point-of-sale systems, issuing cash receipts, custody of cash, and making cash deposits, general guidelines for achieving internal control over cash transactions, including separation of duties and other procedural checks and balances. Presented by Sharon Dowen, Internal Audit; Lisa Pluhm, Bursar's Office.

MOTIVATING AND REWARDING YOUR EMPLOYEES

What can supervisors do to recognize excellence, reward high performing employees, and motivate all to achieve their best? This workshop for supervisors will examine strategies supervisors can use to motivate and reward employees. Presented by Deborah Haliczer, Human Resource Services.

ORIENTING AND TRAINING YOUR EMPLOYEES

Friday, April 28, 1-4:00 p.m. - HSC Illinois Room

After hiring employees, supervisors are responsible for providing orientation to their employees. After the Human Resource orientation, each department must organize appropriate orientation to the department, its procedures, and to the university. Supervisors also need to determine their staff’s training needs and help facilitate employee access to necessary training and development resources. Learn how to orient and manage your employees’ training. Presented by Deborah Haliczer, Human Resource Services.

PLANNING SUCCESSFUL EVENTS & PROGRAMS

Thursday, March 9, 9-11:00 a.m. - HSC Room 306

Many of us are called on to organize and offer programs and events. This workshop will present effective strategies for planning and managing programs, workshops and other events. From the "big picture" to the crucial details, all aspects of event planning will be covered. Presented by Deborah Brue, College of Engineering; Carol Scheidenhelm, Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center; Deborah Haliczer, Human Resource Services.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT & ON-LINE APPLICATION PROCESS

This topic will cover all aspects of student employment processes and procedures on an individual basis. An overview of the new student on-line employment application system from both the student and department employment prospective will also be presented. This system will allow students to place their resume and application information on-line for the departments to review, while allowing departments to post their job and search for available applicants from the system database. All attendees will be given their system login at the end of the training. Call Celeste Latham at 753-6525 to schedule an individual appointment

Anger Management 10 Step Individual Tutorial Program

The key to anger management is learning a set of skills and being able to use these skills to change your response to situations that trigger your anger. The Anger Management Program will use THE ANGER CONTROL WORKBOOK by Matthew McKay and Peter Rogers as the basis for learning these skills. Supervisors are encouraged to refer employees to this program when anger is interfering with their performance. Employees are encouraged to sign up when anger is interfering with their success. This program consists of 10 individual sessions. To sign up, please call 753-9191.
