The U.S Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has revised the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. The amendments to the form mostly relate to documents that can be accepted as proof of identity. The requirement to utilize the updated form is effective as of December 17, 2007. Departments should dispose of all prior versions of the form and begin using the new form immediately. The updated I-9 form is available on the Human Resource Services (HRS) website www.hr.niu.edu/go/I9. Additionally, the U.S Department of Homeland Security has updated the Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the I-9 Form, available at http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/m-274.pdf. Utilization of the appropriate I-9 form for hiring transactions is an important compliance requirement. Therefore, after December 17, if HRS receives transaction documentation utilizing an outdated I-9, the form will be returned to the originating department where it will be necessary to complete the updated form.
If you have questions regarding the I-9 form or would like to participate in I-9 training, scheduled in Human Resource Services on December 12, 2007, please contact HRS at (815) 753-6000.
