With the advice of the University Council, President Peters has approved the following holiday schedule for 2009:

New Year’s Day (Holiday)   Thursday January 1, 2009
Scheduled Closure Day  Friday January 2, 2009
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Holiday) Monday January 19, 2009
Independence Day (Holiday) Friday July 3, 2009**
Labor Day (Holiday) Monday September 7, 2009
Thanksgiving (Holiday) Thursday November 26, 2009
Floating Holiday Friday   November 27, 2009
Floating Holiday                                                  Thursday December 24, 2009
December 25 (Holiday)  Friday December 25, 2009
Floating Holiday Monday December 28, 2009
Floating Holiday Tuesday December 29, 2009
Administrative Closure  Wednesday December 30, 2009
Administrative Closure Thursday December 31, 2009

Hourly employees in positions not covered by collective bargaining agreements will be paid at the regular rate of pay plus 1-1/2 times the regular rate of pay for all hours worked on any of the above named holidays or, if mutually agreed to, by compensatory time off at the rate of time-and-one-half plus holiday pay.  Employees covered by prevailing rates will be compensated in accordance with local area agreements.  Employees required to work on December 30 and 31 (administrative closure days) will be given time off on an hour-for-hour basis to be used by June 30, 2010, or receive additional straight-time pay at the option of the department.

 Per Campus Parking Services, parking enforcement for the 2008/2009 holiday period will be as follows:

December 8-12, 2008  FINALS WEEK: Permits required - parking regulations enforced.
December 15-23, 2008 Permits required - parking regulations enforced
December 24, 2008 - January 4, 2009 No NIU parking permits required - other parking regulations enforced.
January 5-9, 2009  Permits required - parking regulations enforced.
January 12, 2009   FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES:  Permits required - parking regulations enforced.
January 19, 2009  Holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day):  No NIU parking permits required - other parking regulations enforced.

Note:  The visitor's lot will be open at no charge from December 24, 2008 through January 4, 2009.  Payment will be required again on January 5, 2009.

*The following Scheduled Closure Day policy will apply to Friday, January 2, 2009:

January 2, 2009, is designated as a Scheduled Closure Day and will not be considered a designated holiday for pay purposes.  Non-instructional employees normally scheduled to work on January 2 may use accrued vacation benefits or compensatory time off (if available), or the day may be taken without pay.  Non-exempt (hourly Civil Service) employees will be required to mark their timesheets as either vacation or “deduct.”  Exempt employees (salaried Civil Service, SPS, and Faculty on greater than 10-month appointments) wishing to take the day without pay must contact Contracts, Records and Reports no later than December 12 regarding necessary paperwork.  Otherwise, the benefit usage forms should be marked as vacation usage.  This policy pertains to non-negotiated employees.  Any employee (essential service) required to work on January 2 will receive straight-time compensation. 

**Subject to authorization of a 4-day summer work schedule in 2009, the Independence Day holiday would be observed on Thursday - July 2, for those employees participating in the 4-day summer work schedule.
