The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has revised the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form.  The amended form replaces the current form that will expire April 2, 2009.  Departments should dispose of all prior versions of the form and begin using the new form. Human Resource Services will be unable to accept the old form for hires on or after April 3, 2009.

Departments are reminded that Section 1 of the form must be completed the first day of employment and Section 2 within three business days of the first day of work.  There have been several changes to the documents accepted under Section 2 and departments are encouraged to review the information carefully.  Utilization of the appropriate I-9 form and timely completion are important compliance requirements.  To assist departments with I-9 compliance, Human Resource Services will host training sessions on April 14 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and April 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The updated I-9 form is available on the Human Resource Services (HRS) website www.hr.niu.edu/go/I9 and the Handbook for Employers is available for your review at http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/m-274_3apr09.pdf.  In reviewing the Handbook for Employers, you will notice references to the e-verify system.  Departments are advised not to enroll in the system.  State of Illinois public employers will participate at future date and HRS will coordinate necessary implementation procedures at that time.  Questions regarding the e-verify system should be referred to Celeste Latham at 753-6525 or clatham@niu.edu

If you have questions regarding the I-9 form or would like to register for one of the training sessions, please contact HRS at (815) 753-6000.
