NANCY APPERSON, the Coordinator of the Employee Assistance Program, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 37 years of counseling with individuals, families, and groups. She joined the NIU Employee Assistance Office in 1996. Prior to being at NIU, Nancy was the Clinical Director of the Center for Counseling at Family Service Agency in DeKalb for six years. She comes to NIU with a strong understanding of higher education since she was an assistant professor in social work for 10 years at George Williams College and Aurora University. In addition to a strong clinical background, Nancy has certifications in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, Divorce Mediation, and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.
KAREN SMITH, Program Specialist, came to the NIU Employee Assistance Program in 1999 with 20 years experience working as an intake worker in the field of counseling. Karen has excellent knowledge of many of the mental health providers in the DeKalb and Sycamore areas, and has direct experience working with many different insurance companies. Karen can help in finding the resources our employees need and request.
DEBORAH HALICZER, the Employee Relations & Training Director, supervises the Employee Assistance Program. Deborah has two offices; one is located in the Human Resource Services building on west Lincoln Highway, and the other at Holmes Student Center – 7th floor. Deborah is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years of experience as a counselor and an administrator.
Appointments may be scheduled during the employee’s lunch hour as well as after work. In addition, NIU employees may use any service at Human Resource Services including the Employee Assistance Program during the workday provided their absence is approved by their supervisor. The employee does not have to specify which specific service is being sought and may just ask to be excused to go to Human Resource Services.
