City proposes closing Normal Road.
The center of campus may get safer and greener, thanks to a proposal by the City of DeKalb to close a portion of Normal Road that runs through campus.
The idea, which was presented at the June 26 meeting of the DeKalb City Council, would close Normal Road from Lucinda Avenue to about the south side of Founders Memorial Library. Doing so would make it possible to essentially walk from Annie Glidden Road to the East Lagoon without crossing a roadway.
“This fits well with our vision to create a safer walkable campus,” said Assocaite Vice President for Facilities Management and Campus Services John Heckman. “It will enhance the safety of the thousands of students, faculty and staff who cross that road each week.”
Heckmann, who collaborated with the city as the plan was developed, said the ultimate vision is replacing the asphalt with grass and other greenery to enhance this open space much like the adjacent MLK Commons.
The proposal also envisions replacing the four-way stop at Normal and Lucinda with a roundabout, which city engineers believe would enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists.
The university has endorsed the concept. However, the city council has not yet voted on the proposal and no timeline for the project was discussed, should it be approved.
