Benefits

NIU employees have access to comprehensive insurance coverage and other benefits. You must meet eligibility requirements in order to receive certain benefits. Some benefits are provided by the state of Illinois, while others are provided by NIU. Human Resource Services administers all benefits.

Insurance and Retirement

NIU employees can access health, dental, vision, long-term disability and life insurance. You can make changes to your coverage during the annual Benefit Choice period, which is usually in May, or when you experience a qualifying event.

Eligible employees have access to retirement benefits through the State Universities Retirement System (SURS).They also have access to supplemental retirement plans.

Leaves and Time Off

If eligible, you'll earn paid time off, including sick leave and vacation leave. There is also a sick leave bank you can join during the Benefit Choice period.

You may be eligible for additional leaves, such as parental or bereavement leave. Some are paid and some are unpaid.

NIU closes for several days each year, for holidays or administrative reasons. Learn about holidays and closures.
