New Employee Information

Below you will find important information you should review. While the material is not mandatory, you are responsible for knowing and abiding by this information as an NIU employee.

  • Campus security authority training: Campus security authorities (CSAs) are responsible for reporting allegations of certain crimes. Email to request training or to see if you're considered a CSA. You're considered a CSA if:
    • Your position is in public safety, athletics or housing.
    • You have significant responsibility for student activities.
  • FERPA training: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires NIU employees to protect the confidentiality of student information. Complete the FERPA tutorial.
  • Gambling on university property
  • HIPAA: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) established national standards to protect the privacy and security of Protected Health Information (PHI). Review the HIPAA policy so you are aware of how this affects your position and the information you have access to.
  • Safety procedures: While you saw this during your orientation, this is a good reminder to stay up to date on the Emergency Response Guide. It provides information on handling health and safety emergencies at NIU. The guide is available online on the Department of Police and Public Safety website. A printed copy should be available in a central location in your department.

Partner Training

Human Resource Services partners with many others on campus to provide training opportunities to the NIU community. Check out some of our partners below:

  • Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning offers comprehensive services supporting excellence and innovation in teaching, whether in person, online or in between, for everyone who teaches at NIU.
  • Inclusion in Action: a campuswide professional development series for employees at NIU encouraging the support of positive and effective working relationships.
  • Staff Professional Development Academy is a year long, cohort-style professional development and educational program open to all non-academic, full-time civil service and SPS employees.
  • STARS Faculty Academy is not a traditional grant-writing workshop; STARS positions faculty for funding through empowerment with the tools and networking needed to self-direct professional development and steer a career.
